Nature's Ability to Connect Us with God

02/26/2025 - Nature's Ability to Connect Us with God

Throughout this week, I have spent a considerable amount of time outside enjoying the February 70-degree weather. One of my favorite activities is walking along the Trinity River and stopping at the rock bridge to journal and pray. As a Catholic, I believe spending time in the outdoors and observing God’s marvelous works is a form of prayer; I personally feel most connected to God when I am able to reflect on my blessings, especially the beauty of the world around me. We are called to be stewards of God’s creation, and being immersed in nature helps me feel that connection on a deeper level.

As I spend time in nature, I am reminded of how intimately God is involved in every aspect of creation. The sunlight filters through the trees in soft beams, casting shadows that dance on the ground. There’s a peace that comes from being surrounded by the natural world that is hard to replicate elsewhere. I find myself reflecting on the simple yet profound beauty of what God has made—the way the river flows smoothly, undisturbed, with birds soaring high above it. It’s moments like these that make me realize just how much I have to be grateful for. The richness of the landscape—whether it's the rustling of the leaves or the soft breeze against my face—feels like a direct connection to God's presence.

Being in nature helps me center myself, and I often find that my prayers during these times become more authentic, more grounded. The stillness of the outdoors creates space for me to listen—not just to my thoughts, but to the world around me. It’s in these moments that I feel God’s presence the most, as if the earth itself is a constant reminder of His love and creativity. The natural world provides the space for me to listen to Him.

In a world that often feels rushed and disconnected, taking a moment to pause and appreciate the world around me allows me to realign my thoughts, my actions, and my purpose with what truly matters. Each time I sit by the river, I realize that these simple moments of peace—when I slow down enough to recognize them—are where I truly connect with God. Nature is a place where I find clarity and inspiration, and where I can refocus on the values I hold dear. It also reinforces my sense of responsibility as a steward of the earth. I look forward to the many more moments I’ll have to simply be present in nature, pray, and reflect on the beauty of life and the blessings that surround me.

  1. Thanks, this is a really thoughtful, insightful reflection on nature and divinity, or rather on the divine in nature. There are a lot of writers and philosophers who believed that, to gain a glimpse of the Creator, you had to study creation, that is, nature. I feel the awe and sublime of reverence in nature.
